Title:  Staff Engineer, Injection Molding

SUPERVISOR’S TITLE:  Manager or Director, Product Development

 

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Leads the development of precision injection mold tooling and manufacturing processes for Enable Injections as a subject matter expert. This individual will work closely with external suppliers to deliver precise, high quality and cost-effective injection molded components. Support new product introductions with design input, prototyping, sourcing recommendations, supplier task management and commercialization of new and improved product designs. Leads internal and external activities for injection molded component design for manufacturability, tooling design, component qualification, cost reduction and standardization projects. This position will work closely with product development, manufacturing engineering, Supplier Quality Assurance and Operations to assure specifications are met with technically strong, high quality, cost effective tooling following a defined development process.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

 

Required:

 

  • B.S. Plastics/Polymer Engineering or other relevant engineering discipline
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in injection molding technology; OR master’s degree plus 6 years’ experience.  Skills should include vendor selection and management, high precision tool design, molding process development using scientific injection molding principles and mold flow analysis.

Preferred:

 

  • Medical device experience
  • Project Management experience

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Lead development and design of low and high-volume production tools and processes including engineering feasibility, pilot production, process optimization, and validation
  • Provide inputs to the validation of injection molding tools using different types of technologies such as hot runner systems and gating technologies for plastic parts with very tight tolerances
  • Lead project tooling and manufacturing strategy from technical as well as business needs perspective
  • Lead development of process control strategies with internal stakeholders and supplier partners
  • Provide design for manufacturing input during the part design and material selections
  • Coordinate with Supplier Quality Assurance to select and manage external tooling suppliers and mold houses
  • Oversee tool construction process with designated tool builders and mold houses
  • Participate in tool design reviews with third party shops and tooling owners
  • Ensure tool design meets Medical Device Industry Standards and Enable Injections standards
  • Provide engineering expertise for Contract Molding Service activities as they relate to tool maintenance and repairs
  • Provide leadership in problem solving for any tooling related defects, unplanned maintenance, and overall assessment of design to improve uptime and tool performance
  • Coordinate and exercise functional authority for planning, organizing, controlling, integrating, and completing Engineering projects on time and on budget
  • Creates project plans and manages multiple projects simultaneously
